Julia Willand was born in Germany and completed most of her schooling in South Africa. She holds both German and South African citizenships. She ended her schooling with an A-level diploma in Cologne, Germany, and subsequently studied law in Freiburg and Berlin. She achieved her qualification as an attorney at law in Berlin in the year 1999.
Julia Willand has worked in organisations such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and the Zentralstelle für Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. During the course of the GTZ-Project "Law Reform in Latin America" she advised the Ministry of Law in La Paz, Bolivia.
In the year 2000 Julia Willand joined a consulting firm in Cape Town, South Africa, where she founded and headed the immigration department. In May 2005 she started the specialised immigration and consulting company IMCOSA.
Julia Willand is a registered Immigration Practitioner with the Department of Home Affairs. Since April 2003 she has been a member of the national Immigration Advisory Board, which advises the Minister of Home Affairs, as well as a co-director of the Association of Immigration Practitioners of South Africa (AIPSA) until 2006.
Julia is also a co-director of the non-profit organisation Nala - Partners for Entrepreneurship, which aims to foster entrepreneurship development and inter-cultural dialogue.
In August 2004 Julia represented South Africa in beach volleyball at the Olympic Games in Athens. This was the first time an African beach volleyball team had qualified for the Olympics.
